Caring for Your Artwork
Thoughtful placement and gentle handling can help protect your artwork. Follow any care instructions supplied with your particular piece.
Placement
Display artwork indoors, away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, water, and strong sources of heat.
Avoid placing artwork directly above radiators or in areas exposed to steam or splashes.
Handling
Handle artwork with clean, dry hands. Hold framed or stretched pieces by their supporting frame, and avoid pressing on the painted surface or canvas.
For large or heavy pieces, ask another person to help.
Cleaning
Dust frames gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Do not apply water, household cleaners, alcohol, or solvents to a painted surface.
Do not attempt to clean flaking, cracked, or damaged paint. Ask a qualified art conservator for advice.
Glazing
If the frame has glass or acrylic glazing, apply a suitable cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto the frame. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Hanging
Use hanging hardware suitable for the artwork’s weight and your wall type. Check that fittings are secure before displaying the piece.
Rolled Canvas
Unpack carefully and keep the canvas away from sharp objects. Consult a professional framer about stretching or framing. Do not iron or forcibly flatten the painted surface.
